FC Schalke 04 has just joined the esports competition that is currently being created by eFootball.Pro and KONAMI. The German team, which already has experience in electronic sports, is the second club to announce its participation in the league following FC Barcelona’s announcement last February.
According to the German club, this new project is regarded as an opportunity to expand its presence in electronic sports: "FC Schalke 04 was one of the pioneering sports clubs worldwide to incorporate its very own esports department,” the club’s Chief Gaming Officer Tim Reichert said. “We opt to expand our commitment even further and venture out into different branches as well.”
"We are looking forward to joining the competition by eFootball.Pro and KONAMI,” Reichert continued. “Our participation allows us to establish our brand also internationally and continue competing at the highest level. We believe that this league with teams like FC Barcelona will be such a great event for us and our fans, in which we will be able to further showcase our expertise and effort.”
Gerard Piqué, the eFootball.Pro president and founder, said he was delighted with the new addition. "We are very happy with this signing for eFootball.Pro,” Piqué explained. “Schalke has a lot of experience in esports and this will help us make the competition a quality one. Schalke 04 will also be a very tough opponent for Barça, just like the other teams that will join the competition. We want to create a league that is a reference point within electronic sports and are sure that we will surprise both current and future fans alike.”
KONAMI, one of the project’s main pillars, also spoke about the agreement. “We are excited to have Schalke 04 named as a part of our new and illustrious esports league that eFootball.Pro and KONAMI are creating,” said Masami Saso, President of Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. “We said how ambitious this club is, both on and off the pitch, and believe their participation further validates the eFootball.Pro league and we look forward to the level of professional talent Schalke 04 will introduce to the esports world.”
FC Schalke 04 will have a professional team in the eFootball.Pro competition, which will compete using KONAMI’s football video game series.
